Further to a call for projects launched by Rencontres, Montreal-based artists Jean-François Hamelin and Sara A.Tremblay were selected to carry out a photo assignment on the contemporary Gaspesian landscape from June to December 2016. The results of their respective projects are being presented at this 8th edition.

Living and working in Montreal, Sara A.Tremblay holds a masters in fine arts from Concordia University. Her works have been presented in Québec (FOFA Gallery, Montreal; Espace F, Matane; 32nd International Symposium of Contemporary Art of Baie-Saint-Paul; Galerie Donald Browne, Montreal) and Ontario (YYZ Artist’s Outlet, Toronto) as well as in Sweden. She did a residency in Själsö, Sweden, under the Brucebo Fine Art Summer Residency Scholarship program that was recently the subject of a publication entitled Själsö (VU, Québec City). In 2014 she was awarded the very first Yvonne L. Bombardier Visual Arts Scholarship. She also collaborated with Québec artist Manon De Pauw on the exhibition Études, developed during a creation residency at the Guido Molinari Foundation in Montreal.

Born in 1982, Jean-François Hamelin lives and works in Montreal, where he divides his time between his photo projects and teaching. After training in architecture at Université de Montréal and supported by a grant from the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, he continued his studies in photography at Concordia University, where he was awarded a merit scholarship. In collaboration with two other photographers, in 2013 he founded the Photobook Club – Montréal, whose goal was to democratize and support the dissemination of the photobook as a work of art in its own right.

He is the recipient of two Magenta awards (2013 and 2017). His work has been presented in several countries, including in Italy as part of the Fotografia festival in 2013, in Croatia at the Karas gallery in 2012, and in Canada. His project La Pointe was presented in Montreal (Centre culturel Georges-Vanier; Maison de la culture Marie-Uguay). Since 2016 he has been co-publisher at Éditions du renard, a Québec publishing company specializing in photographic works and books.

EXHIBIT AT RENCONTRES

Acharné, acharné paysage
(Tenacious, Tenacious Landscape)

“We learned, over time, to inhabit a region, to live there and die there, and it is our lives and our deaths that ended up naming the country ours. What is it, this country lined with roads never leading anywhere except to ourselves?

“Harvested from two photo assignments carried out in 2016, the exhibit Acharné, acharné paysage presents a poetic incursion into those explorations of the Gaspé region. Between forest and rock, obstructed visions breaking through towards the infinite, the landscape reveals itself to be polymorphous, often wild, sometimes inhabited, or at the very least occupied. Occupied by human beings, certainly, but above all by itself, for itself, each landscape living its own life, and bearing, very much like each one of us, the burden of its own quest on its back of rock.”
