Immeasurable

Rachel Echenberg, Montreal, Québec | rachelechenberg.net

Immeasurable was born of the encounter between Rachel Echenberg’s family and Anticosti Island. In 2018 the artist did a series of performances in the area with her husband, Sébastien Worsnip, and their daughter, Clara Echenberg-Worsnip. At the heart of this insular and isolated spacetime, she staged her family in a different landscape and life. At a number of spots around the island, together they reproduced actions where their bodies connected, piled up and bonded more closely with what was unknown to them.

Between intimacy and loss of bearings, the family connections subtly retraced themselves in these places. The existing ties within the family nucleus redefined themselves, stretched out and tightened in each of the encounters created by the artist. Her work evokes the family as a social cohabitation structure: a complex structure, imbued with tensions and with beauty. Close to places of vanished houses or in intact natural spaces, the artist composed a new narrative that makes both proximity and distance visible and that takes shape modestly by means of photography.
