{"id":11432,"date":"2020-08-11T19:15:36","date_gmt":"2020-08-11T19:15:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/2020.photogaspesie.ca\/les-rencontres-sur-le-web-a-compter-du-21-aout\/"},"modified":"2020-08-11T19:34:23","modified_gmt":"2020-08-11T19:34:23","slug":"rencontres-on-the-web-starting-august-21","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/2020.photogaspesie.ca\/en\/rencontres-on-the-web-starting-august-21\/","title":{"rendered":"Rencontres on the Web : Starting August 21"},"content":{"rendered":"<p lang=\"fr-CA\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Not being able to stage the usual Rencontres on Tour given the context of the pandemic, this year\u2019s Rencontres internationales de la photographie en Gasp\u00e9sie is presenting Rencontres on the Web, which will allow the public, beginning August 21, 2020, to see videos, interviews and archival photographs online.<\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"fr-CA\">\u201c<span lang=\"en-US\">Complementary to the exhibitions being held right across the Gasp\u00e9 region since mid-July,\u201d mentions Claude Goulet, executive and artistic director of Rencontres, \u201cthe material posted during Rencontres on the Web will enable audiences everywhere to discover the artists participating in the 2020 edition, along with their work, in addition to encouraging them to visit the Gasp\u00e9 Peninsula to discover the actual exhibits. We\u2019re also taking advantage of the opportunity to showcase three residency projects that have taken place in the region over the last ten years and that feature residents of the Gasp\u00e9.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\"><strong>Videos<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Beginning August 21, 2020, Rencontres on the Web will be presenting an excerpt from the video <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Deployment<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">, by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/2020.photogaspesie.ca\/en\/portfolio\/emmanuelle-leonard-in-chandler\/\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Emmanuelle L\u00e9onard<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"en-US\"> (Montreal, Qu\u00e9bec) <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">\u2012<\/span> <span lang=\"en-US\">the exhibit of the same name is being held in Chandler <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">\u2012<\/span> <span lang=\"en-US\">as well as an excerpt from <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Stem<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">, by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/2020.photogaspesie.ca\/en\/portfolio\/nelly-eve-rajotte-in-carleton-sur-mer\/\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Nelly-Eve Rajotte<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"en-US\"> (Montreal, Qu\u00e9bec), a film work <\/span><span lang=\"en-CA\">enjoying large-scale <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">projection at Carleton-sur-Mer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"fr-CA\"><a name=\"_GoBack\"><\/a> <span lang=\"en-US\">The public will also get to see <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Interwoven Roots <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">and <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Atterwasch<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">. The result of a photographic and intergenerational meetup of colorful seniors and teenagers recently arrived in Montreal, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Interwoven Roots <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">is a video (documentary short) and photo project. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">It was directed by Paul Tom (director, cameraman and editor) and photographer <a href=\"https:\/\/2020.photogaspesie.ca\/en\/portfolio\/joannie-lafreniere-in-paspebiac\/\">Joannie Lafreni\u00e8re<\/a> (Montreal, Qu\u00e9bec), based on an original idea of drama teacher M\u00e9lissa Lefebvre\u2019s. The documentary <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Atterwasch<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">, meanwhile, was directed by Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Dubois (Qu\u00e9bec\/Germany) and <a href=\"https:\/\/2020.photogaspesie.ca\/en\/portfolio\/marco-del-pra-in-petite-vallee\/\">Marco del Pra\u2019<\/a> (Italy\/Germany). It deals with the German village of Atterwasch and the uncertainty facing its inhabitants under pressure to make way for a new open-pit coal mine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"fr-CA\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Finally, two excerpts from <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Nomad Conversations<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">, a documentary shot by the French-Italian artist <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.elenaperlino.com\/\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Elena Perlino<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"en-US\"> during a residency in Qu\u00e9bec Innu communities in 2019, will also be screened on the Web.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span lang=\"en-US\">Snapshots with the 2020 artists<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">Not being able to host the artists of this 11th edition in the Gasp\u00e9 Peninsula for the usual <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Rencontres on Tour, the event entrusted director and editor \u00c9milie Beaulieu-Gu\u00e9rette with the mission of reaching out to them so that we could share with the public a glimpse of their work. The result was a series of short videos introducing the photographers and videographers of the 2020 edition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span lang=\"en-US\">Empreintes\u2026 dix ans de Rencontres<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">While waiting for the publication of the work <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Empreintes\u2026 dix ans de Rencontres<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">, scheduled for autumn 2020, Rencontres is offering the public a look back in pictures at three outstanding exhibitions staged as part of the event and featuring residents of the Gasp\u00e9 Peninsula<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">. Those are the exhibits <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Chandler, les portraits en papier<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Gasp\u00e9siennes<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> and <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Journal de la Stone (1965-2015), New Richmond<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">Presented in Chandler in 2011, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Chandler, les portraits en papier<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> by Dan Bergeron (Toronto ,Ontario) consisted of a series of public portraits carried out during an artist\u2019s residency and whose subject was the former workers at the defunct Gasp\u00e9sia pulp and paper mill. At the 2nd edition of Rencontres, before the plant\u2019s demolition, those photos were exhibited in very large format on disused buildings of the mill complex.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">The <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Gasp\u00e9siennes<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> project, meanwhile, by Jean-Fran\u00e7ois B\u00e9rub\u00e9 (Montreal, Qu\u00e9bec) and Sophie Jean (Rimouski, Qu\u00e9bec), grew out of a residency of over 14 days in the vast Gasp\u00e9 region in 2011 designed to photograph women in their environment and in a small improvised mobile studio. Seeking to pay tribute to the women who contributed to the development of the region, Rencontres presented the results of their project in Carleton-sur-Mer in 2011, then at Cap-Chat in 2012. Their impressive mosaic, entitled <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Gasp\u00e9siennes<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">, showed 30 committed, warm-hearted women of the peninsula.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">Lastly, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Journal de la Stone (1965-2015), New Richmond<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">, presented at Rencontres in 2016, is the work of Gasp\u00e9 native Guillaume D. Cyr. The artist, who had done a series of photographs from 2005 to 2015 on the theme of the Smurfit-Stone paper mill in New Richmond (closed since 2005), created a photo installation of 40 portraits of employees and printed newspapers that presented a triptych of photo series.
